Developmental Stages:
There is no life busier than a toddler’s – they are checking out everything. At this age, all neurons are firing and the connections are fast and furious. Toddlers need truly interactive toys that engage, are child-powered and imaginative.
12 to 18 months
They are standing, walking and maneuvering stairs. They often play by themselves. The best toys are stuffed animals, dolls, books and small toys that can be pulled and pushed, filled and emptied, opened and closed. Choose toys that open and close and have lots of knobs and dials. Ride-on toys are fun and age appropriate if the child can walk. Sorting toys are also fun for toddlers.
Recommendations for this developmental stage:
Push and pull toys, Fit-together toys
Nesting toys, Pounding toys
Jack-in-the-boxes, Balls
Bath toys, Cloth and board books
18 to 24 months
Toddlers are walking and running everywhere. Besides large motor skills, they are also developing small motor skills as they manipulate smaller objects. Speech is also developing. Select toys, such as blocks, that enhance children’s shape recognition. Toddlers also enjoy toys such as push-and-pull buses and trains with plastic people they can remove. These types of toys help to improve a toddler’s hand-eye coordination.
Recommendations for this developmental stage:
Push and pull toys, Fit-together toys
Early blocks, Pounding toys
Soft dolls, Pretend play house
Large-peg puzzles, Pretend vehicles
